Balvenie Ambassador Daniel Shen (Taiwan)
Hello from Far East Asia, from Balvenie Ambassador in Taiwan.
Where I was born and raised is a tropical island called Taiwan. It’s about half of the size of Scotland, and approximate the same size of State of Maryland in the United State. It is the 23 million hard-working people’s contribution making Taiwan the 25th largest economic entity in the world. Talking about whisky, my fellow Taiwanese people’s enthusiasm about Scotch makes it the fifth importing country in the world. Another surprise statistics number, it is the third largest market of Balvenie. All these numbers only clarify one thing: we people do drink a lot!
Just like my fellow Ambassadors, what I do is sharing the touching stories about the craftsmen and the wonderful taste of the Balvenie in the mentoring sessions and other occasions, many involve endless dinner with bottles of Balvenie. The hardest part of my job is having dinner and drinking with guests and chat about Balvenie and still stay sober in the end! It’s a tradition in Asia that spirits always go with food. Many whisky enthusiasts experiment many kinds of food matching, and surprisingly Scotch malts match quite well with Asian food (especially Chinese, Taiwanese and Japanese). Balvenie’s honey and vanilla notes match perfectly with Taiwanese cuisine.
Here I am doing a lot of collaboration with different industries including sports cars and luxury goods. Next time I will share with you about the collaboration of British arts and craftsmanship: Aston Martin and the Balvenie.
